François-Dominique Toussaint Louverture, also known as Toussaint L'Ouverture or Toussaint Bréda, was a Haitian general and prominent leader of the Haitian Revolution. Louverture was born enslaved around 1743 on the plantation of Bréda on the northern coast of Saint-Domingue (now Haiti).
